Eyes Are The Window To Your Soul As Well As Your Health…

Eyes are said to be “a window to the soul”—and your general health. Did you know that a routine eye examination can reflect illness that begins in another tissue far away from the eyes themselves…?

Your eyes are like mirror, reflecting the various physiological changes happening in different parts of the body whether it is in the small blood vessels or nerves or in any other organ of the body. Here are conditions that eye doctors can discover during an eye exam, such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, autoimmune disorders, multiple sclerosis and much more…….

“During a routine eye check-up any ophthalmologist can catch all these changes happening within the eye,” says Dr. Pritam Dedhia. “Picking up all these changes at an early stage will surely help in preventing further damage and an early treatment can be planned,” he says.

Dr. Dedhia says many times, you may have slight visual issues that cause you to seek out an eye exam initially. But the exam can reveal your vision issue is related to — or perhaps even being caused by — a bigger health problem. Additionally, you might be completely asymptomatic and not even know you have an underlying health issue, but an ophthalmologist can take one look into your eyes and see another story.

Here are some health warning signs ophthalmologists can find in your eyes:

1.       Diabetes:

Dr.
Dedhia looks for a condition called Diabetic Retinopathy in all diabetics, which damages the blood vessels in the eye. “We can see areas of bleeding and swelling in the retina, or abnormal blood vessels developing, which are hallmarks of diabetic damage,” he says. This damage can be observed even before vision is affected.

When diabetic retinopathy is detected, you’ll typically have laser treatments and medications to repair blood vessels. However, you may need surgery if the bleeding is severe enough.

In the early stages of diabetic retinopathy, you may not experience any vision changes, but your Retina Specialist will be able to diagnose the disease by careful examination of your retina.

2.       Heart Conditions:

In some cases, heart conditions associated with a build-up of plaque in the carotid artery in the heart can also lead to deposits that block the ocular arteries in the eye. If your eye specialist detects such changes in the tiny blood vessels at the back of the eye, he or she will typically recommend going to a specialist. Hence early intervention can be planned.

3.       High Blood Pressure:

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a very common disease and has different manifestations in the eye depending on the severity and duration of the disease. In very severe hypertension, there are characteristic findings in the eye, including swelling of the optic nerve and bleeding in the retina.

4.       Autoimmune Disorders:

While there are many autoimmune disorders that involve the eye, the focus in this section is on rheumatoid arthritis. The most common eye problem associated with this condition is dry eye, which can be severe, and is related to insufficient tears.

5.       Cancer:

Cancer commonly metastasizes to the eye. The most typical intraocular metastases arise from breast or lung cancers, but they can be related to brain tumors, as well.

Your Eye Doctor's Appointment Could Change Your Life...

So the next time you visit Dr. Pritam Dedhia at Vatsal Eye Care, remember that a comprehensive eye exam can do much more than just determine your eyeglasses or contact lens number. Your eyes can be checked for any other existing or potential health issues, and thus the best possible care can be planned accordingly. By knowing that you're at risk for a certain disease, you can take precautions early on and manage the condition as needed. After all, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

  1. According to William Shakespeare, eyes are the windows to the soul, but your next visit to the ophthalmologist could reveal tons about your overall health also. Ophthalmologists often see clues within the eyes that warn of health issues elsewhere in your body. Ophthalmologist Dr. Sahil Jain says diseases and other issues may show up when your eyes are checked. Any ophthalmologist who does routine eye exams can detect these problems.

Eye checkups are essential not just for the eye's health but also for determining if issues affect multiple organs or the whole body that require attention. Taking the time for a yearly eye exam not only protects your eyes but can safeguard your overall health.
